A failing anti-lock braking system (ABS) can indeed lead to the brakes locking during emergency stops. The primary function of ABS is to prevent wheel lock-up during braking, especially in emergency situations or on slippery surfaces. When the ABS is functioning correctly, it modulates brake pressure to allow the wheels to continue to rotate, maintaining traction and allowing the driver to steer while braking.

If the ABS is failing, it may not be able to perform this modulation effectively. As a result, the wheels can lock up, causing the vehicle to skid rather than stop in a controlled manner. This situation can significantly increase the risk of losing control of the vehicle during emergencies, emphasizing the importance of a properly functioning ABS for safety.

The other choices do not directly pertain to symptoms associated with a failing ABS. For instance, drifting to one side may suggest a different issue, such as alignment problems or uneven brake application, while speedometer malfunctions and dimming headlights are unrelated to the braking system itself.
